Mini Matters, a miniature painting podcast. Well, there we are everyone. Welcome to the first of our beautiful new show the Mini Matters podcast. That is the name I think we've crowned it. Um and of course this is me, Jamie Hubba speaking, from Mini Matters, who you might know from other places like Mini Matters or the Hubba show. Uh they are the only two Well, unless you know me in person, then obviously you know who I am, but needless to say Lionel is with us. Say hello, Lionel.
Hi guys. And Mr. Arnau um middle name Lazaro. No, it's not my middle name. It's my uh surname. I knew there was some weird this or uh I mean last name. My name is Arnau and then we have two last names, which is Lazaro and Karate. Karate. I'm Spanish. It's Yeah, we have two two last names. I I learned this right. Lionel, did you know Arnau's name has an R? Like you've got to roll the R for Arnau. So, uh uh Did I know it had an R in it? Yes, cuz I've seen it written. The pronunciation though. Arnau.
And the only way I can do it is Ar- Arnau. And I can't do I can't do the rest of it. I I fucking love how you uh Scottish I can't I can't It's the only Arnau. I can't do I can't do I can do Ar- now, but I don't I don't have to take like a really long break. Ar- nau. Arnau. Um so yes, we are the the What is it? Quadruplets? We're No, that's four. Trip- triplets. We Yeah, but I want to say Oh, the trio. We are the trio that makes up uh Mini Matters. So, um the the new show uh we're going to try and have a very specific format to it. That the the order of the format will change um and we're going to give you some information on what to expect. Not not all of the things we're going to give away, for sure, but basically, we're going to go through what we're going to do.
And I'll say what it is then. I thought one of you would. So, I think every episode we're going to have a theme of of the episode and topic of the week is what we're labeling it. And ah Hold on. Topic of the week. Our topic of That's the jingle, right? When you hear that in the future, obviously I won't say it. So, when you hear the jingle, yeah, you'll know. And the topic of the week is Hold on. It might be a bit loud. I might need to Hold on. So, that is the jingle for topic of the week. I'll just give it one more time.
Uh Topic of the week. All right, okay. So, get used to that. Now, the topic of the week will be a theme or a discussion point that we will have every week. And we won't go into it right now, but today's topic of the week will be the first introductions to the game or or how we got into the game when we started. So, like, you know, going back whenever you were an adult or a child or Um and we'll go through that. But needless to say, the other We've got some other features that are short, spangy, and sparkly.
And when we do them, you will enjoy them. And then we have Lionel's um friend Arnauld, who's going to explain what the painting what the Great recovery. Great recovery. Uh what the painting So, we've got the journey. We're labeling it. Yeah, so we have this this idea that we want to paint our armies, right? And obviously, as we have lives, things get in the middle if you don't prioritize.
So, our idea is to force ourselves to to paint uh units for our own our armies um weekly or monthly. And then, if we do it through this through the this podcast and updating it, and then we get to share it with the community, and the community can get uh on board with us. And then, we can all get um hyped and and follow our process mutually, you know? And I I think that's that's something that I really excites me because I'm I'm now that I started I'm starting to have like a decent painted army.
I really want to make it grow, you know, and and paint a lot of units, and you know, make it Really cool. as I always envisioned as a as a kid. And this Yeah, I think Like going to Warhammer World when we went the other day, it always reminds me of like a uh averagely painted army, as in not an exceptionally painted army just looks amazing when you put it together. Uh Yeah. And when we played I think when I've had like m- I don't know, more painted than not, you realize how how different the game is as well for some reason. Like some weird subconscious extra level of enjoyment.
My idea always obviously as a as a professional painter, my idea was to have the best painted army in the fucking world. But, this this never happens because uh to paint an army like that, you have to spend days uh or weeks for one single miniature. So, it's absolutely impossible to have uh a painted army in the level that I want. How long did you spend on this Sanguinary In the Sanguinor? Uh I spent I mean, it was it was like a couple of months maybe, but you know, I was painting it just 1 hour at a time or yeah.
But, you also say There's also something to be said about tabletop standard whereby if you're running 2 to 3,000 points, quality gets lost to a degree. You only need to be a certain level. As you said, Jamie, where the whole army is painted it looks amazing. But over that level, you get very little payback in terms of the impact it makes in a 2,000-point army set up on the table. Yeah. It's great painting when you see an army Yeah, when you see an army all painted, it doesn't matter the standard. It can be a you know, a gaming standard. And you see it all in the table and and you say, "Why don't I have this?" Like, "I'm a I'm a painter. I know how to paint.
Not Not only I know how to paint a good level, I know how to paint medium level as well." So, why why don't I do it? Yeah. And that's when when I brings us back to the whole thing of we need or our aim for the the journey and it is to motivate well, honestly, mostly ourselves, right? But we ideally want to bring the community with us. So, we've we've created a Discord server. Um at the moment there are three members, three good members, obviously. Might be Lionel now. Um and there's a channel in there called the journey. And our idea basically is to whips finish things to motivate each other, but specifically what we want to do, at least maybe less you, Lionel, because you're doing the figure painting at the moment, but ideally, I think we want one model painted a week. For each podcast, we want to have something in the journey that we've painted that week. So, it gives us accountability cuz then we'll come on the podcast and look like cheats if we haven't painted, basically. Um and what we'd love, I think, is if if other people
if other people come on that journey to help motivate us. Um yeah, cuz And themselves as well, like if they can they can have a a place to to to get that motivation that we are getting as well, then it's perfect. We all get it. Um Thing's worth saying as well, although we've used armies as a as an example, whatever you're painting, yeah, a 75 mil, be it a bust, it's not just limited to an army. It's whatever you want. Yeah, of course. Yeah, it's just it just happens that we're on the hype train at the moment uh now and I of the 40K, which is why we're pushing that narrative. Um and what what Yeah, what we've found is you surround yourself with other people of that hype, and then it just it's a self-fulfilling it What's that word? Um where you put Prophecy. Prophecy.
Self-fulfilling prophecy. I thought that's what you're going to hear. Uh well, I was thinking more like like you put one Imagine a bowl um and it's got no it's empty, and then you put a um a marble in. And you fill it up, and then it becomes full. That's the analogy I was going for. That's Like um Ah, yes, the the famous marble-in-bowl analogy. Literally, um basically I think there's books about it, yes. Yeah. It's doctrines. Um literally, my point is if we surround ourselves with joy and hap- No, fuck me. Look, basically, if everyone else gets on the train, we're on the train there, and the train goes into the stop.
It's not even an analogy. I You know what I'm saying. Yeah. It's a self-fulfilling It's a fish Yeah, a fish that that bites its own tail. Yep. Yep. Yep. It's that. Uh No, re- really, what I'm trying to say is Arnaud and I surround ourselves already with each other uh um within the hobby, and and we're much more motivated than we were before we started to paint armies. And we know we like it, and if we get more people in that, that hype train gets full, and then it gets to the stop faster. The analogy just doesn't work. Anyway, uh the journey, that's what we need and want. And that's what we're doing for everyone. We sold this a lot better in our test episode.
Um So Did we? I feel like we did. Well, we'll find out. So yeah, we'll be It was going It was going fine until the marbles hit a bowl. Yeah, exactly. So we're come off. We'll We'll obviously put the Discord in the description of everything and and we'll probably share that separately as well. I imagine like if we can and like, you know, we've got a Discord server. Um and it's basically a hobby server, isn't it? And then there's one channel called The Journey. I think it's the way we're going to do it. Yeah, well, I guess we look after as well on on Instagram and Mhm. Yeah, you know Of course. Yeah. I think um there's a there's a lot of opportunities for us like in the past we've obviously had um What was it called, Lionel, the hashtag?
Oh, hashtag day or Mini Matters Daily Choice. Mini Matters Daily Choice. So this kind of supersedes that in that respect that we we will absolutely be featuring models with your permission. Um mostly because we're just surrounding ourselves and it's the hobby and I think that's the things we like, right? Um Yeah. So I think that's I think that's all the the other news like we're going to be planning um to to do these fairly regularly. Uh I don't think we're committing to any real date, but hopefully uh soon we find a rhythm and then you'll know the dates that we'll be releasing and the the frequency that we are.
Um Yeah. And I think This is our first episode, so well, it's a 1.5 episode. So basically we are we are testing and and we are getting used to it. Obviously it's not our it's not our job or anything. We don't We don't know how to do it really. Yeah. So we hope to grow with with our listeners and obviously we want to to hear um you know, things that you want to you want to hear from us or that we can topics that we can do or or ideas for sections. We have a lot of ideas for sections because we have a like a a fourth minion that helps us. But He's a good kid.
If if we had new new new ideas, it would be awesome as well. Yeah, yeah. I think feedback is always welcome. Negative, positive. Positive's probably nicer to hear, but negative if if we need to improve is is always good. So, we will throw a curveball in and we're going to go straight to the Now, for anybody who didn't understand, that was the would you rather game. It's a listener would you rather game, guys. But that's like a zombie. I have to say something. Well, I had to you know, when you record as many as you I have you have to spice it up. So, um today's So, obviously these features, there's a lot that we've not featured in today's episode that we've got coming and this is one of them. So, would you rather be an Imperial Guardsman on the front lines against a Tyranid invasion?
Pretty crap. Mhm. Or a Servitor in the depths of Mechanicus Forge World. Now, I'm I think a Servitor which I I had I thought it was a skull. But I think it's actually one of those bitch men, right? Who are like Yeah, it's basically a mindless creature like it's more of a machine. Do they have souls though? What is a soul? That's metaphorical. You You mean do they have consciousness? No, there's souls in 40K like No, they they don't have consciousness.
They don't have consciousness, I think. So, in in Spanish we have this this um this thing that that we say that it's it's from Guatemala to Watapier. So, it's basically from bad to worse. Yeah, because there's no there's no winning here. The only The positive of Guardsman is you're an adult and it means that you've lived a life. So, you've possibly had sex, you've possibly got a family. Like you you've you've experienced things, haven't you? Whereas a Servitor, do they die nearly and then they get I'm not sure what happens with a Servitor if they just become Servitors or or they are Servitors for forever, you know. They've committed a crime, haven't they? My understanding is they committed some kind of crime, and then the sentence is they are lobotomized and they become Servitors as their punishment. Oh, that is Okay, so they have also lived a life.
So, that mitigates my My understanding, like I said, I'm Adam to three if it's here, I hold my hands up and I know the least about Although you've come up with the most But my But my It must be my legal background. My understanding is that's what they are. They're They're individuals who've committed some crime. And their punishment is Yeah, the punishment is that they become a Servitor and they're lobotomized. That's my understanding. Well, then they they lived a better life than than a Guardsman. Yeah, well, they committed a crime, probably. Um has any Guard force ever beaten Tyrannids in a in a war?
That's the question, isn't it? Cuz you could Yeah, I'm sure. There's a chance you survive, right? Well, yeah, of course, but not many, I think. What what's the Is it the the average lifespan of an Imperial Guardsman? 2 days, isn't it? Once they joined. 2 days? No, 2 and 1/2 weeks. Like you would just wouldn't join, would you? I think it's a choice. But But they do it for the Emperor. Yeah. Well, he's a false god anyway, so I don't know why He's not that false god. He is. He Uh Horus did nothing wrong. Is that Is that the saying?
No, Magnus did nothing Magnus, I don't even know what he He ate a mag cornetto or something, didn't he? Horus did that. Fucked ton of things up. Okay. But they joined in chaos. All right, who's going first with their answer and their reasons? Yeah, I'm going to I'm a guard, 100%. Like you're probably going to live. I think I'm quite lucky. Well, yeah, I guess I Guardsman. At least you have some Call of Duty action. And then You don't feel pain though as a servitor, do you? But yeah. I suppose I would go Guardsman only in the sense that when it does end, it'll be done in 2 and 1/2 days, whereas with a servitor, you've got a lifetime of just servitude.
Um It's a pretty rubbish, but one will end quicker than the other. So, I think I'd go with the the the Guardsman. I would hate have a chance with a Guardsman. Listen, there is no survival. If If If you're an Imperial Guard regiment holding off a Tyranid horde, you're only holding it off long enough for the Space Marines to arrive. You're done. What You could be Exterminatus and Yeah. You could literally be like the guy in one of the siege weapons. Can't even run away. Can't even run away. You can't even cower and run away cuz your commissar will execute you.
It's It's You go forwards, you're dead. You go backwards, you're dead. It's You've got That's why you're That's why your lifespan 2 and 1/2 days. It's tough. Yeah, I I I I'm going to say that I would not enjoy that at all. Um Okay, so should we do topic of the week or um the diary? Topic of the week's a beefy discussion. Yeah, that's the topic of the week. Okay. Topic of the week. All right. So, You know you're laughing at the end just It was actually very in depth. It was um it was heavy breathe It was it was a laugh, but I kept it in the same breath. Anyway, so topic of the week obviously is how we got into the hobby.
And and I I suppose expand on it cuz otherwise it would literally be like a one-word answer. I walked past a Games Workshop and I liked it. Um Yeah. I I I I actually think all of my Warhammer problems stemmed from my feelings or joy that I had as a kid. You know, chasing that. I think I've mentioned it in my videos like um cuz I couldn't buy anything cuz I had a paper round that paid 10 pound a week. I was very limited in in you know, what I could buy.
Um which on paper sounds good, 40 quid a month, but it was an hour every morning. Um and it was a brutal route. I think the guy knew what he was doing cuz I was like, this guy's an idiot. Anyway, um so the first time I ever the first model I ever bought, believe it or not, was the Avatar. The elder Avatar. I went to The elder. Yeah. I went to the plaza. That's why he's there. It was the first the very first. I remember the box. I remember the plaza like I remember the staff guy. He helped me convert it with green stuff at the store.
Um and then I had to carry it home on the tube and I felt people were looking at me and I felt extremely privileged to be able to get that attention from people. And I wanted to be like, it's fucking Warhammer, you stupid cunt. Even though uh It's line of sight. Even though it was my first time using Warhammer, if you know what I mean. Um Yeah. So, yeah. Uh the plaza as well, like when you go up those escalators and it was there on the left. Like, I don't know. The fact that I have those memories so clearly when I was like 11 or 12.
And and why did you go to the store? Like that's Alex Tennyson, um who was actually the great great-grandchild of Lord Alfred Tennyson, who's an extremely famous poet if you like poems. Um I don't, so I don't know. Anyway, he was like, "I like Warhammer." I was like, "Cool." I like it, too, now. Let's go. And he was like, "Cool." All right. I was like, "I'll try it. Like, it looks cool. There's there's everything I like, it's sci-fi, fantasy, sort of thing." So, yeah, that was it. Went Honestly, like from that moment on, I was like, "This is the thing." You know, well, at least for the next 3 years until I discovered alcohol and women and stuff.
Well, I don't drink, actually. I didn't Yeah. Yeah. That's something That's something something so common in the in hobbies So weird. they discover Warhammer and then there's a period Puberty hits, basically. Uh yeah, yeah, basically. And then they just don't touch any Warhammer whatsoever for like 4 years and then they go back to it. Lit- literally, like 6 months after being with Tina, I was like, "Warhammer." Like Same happened with me and Denise. It's so weird.
Like, I was like, "Right, I'm going to keep this girl probably for the rest of my life. So, I don't care about women anymore. I've got spare time to do Yeah, go on. Line them all now." Mine is depressingly similar to yours, actually, in that Did you say depressingly? Yeah. Well, it's it's bizarre. Well, I'll tell you. Um and you'll be like, "You just copied my idea but changes changed some of the de- details of the same." So, mine I was introduced to Games Workshop in general through a friend. In the sense that one day, you know how you go around each other's houses, you play it was Mega Drives back then and Master Systems, which is really aging me. And he had um Epic on his table with the Titans. He was painting them and I was drawn to it because because of the painting. Not so much that his painting was any good, but I was already into my art at that point in terms of drawing images from comic books and that kind of stuff. And I was doing um an interesting art at school. So that's
what drew me to it and just the world and the lore seemed really interesting. However, at the time I lived at Peterborough and there was no Games Workshop. This is when the nearest one was the nearest county, which was Cambridge. So Wait, you went to the Cambridge store? Yeah, so as an adult that doesn't mean anything. But back then when you relied when you relied on um lifts from your parents, it might as well have been another country. So I too had a paper round um Mhm. and I saved my paper round money. How much did you get a week?
Sorry? How much did you get a week in your paper round? Do you remember? Really bad. It was like £6. So when you said £10 it sounded like good money. But then again, I'm I'm older Six yeah. Um and the first thing I bought was the metal terminators that they released, the Blood Angel ones on the front cover. Jesus. And cuz I I I I went with my own money and it was my birthday, so I got birthday money as well. And I bought Space Hulk. Oh, wow. And and that was Yeah, that was that was my first purchase and then Went hard. Wow.
But Bob, the reason being is I was never going to get near that store for another year. I was only going because it was my birthday and somebody was my dad was giving me a lift. It wasn't like I could be there the following week. So I kind of saved, knew what I wanted and went in and and and there was that. And then maybe about maybe about two or three years later the Peterborough one opened up. From that weekly visit and I think my first purchase was the Dante for Blood Angels. I didn't know you were a Blood Angels head and now it's all coming out like I did two Blood Angels I've done two Blood Angel armies in my time. Like fully painted armies.
That's like surprised me it it just surprises me cuz obviously I'm now waxing lyrical about Blood Angels all the time and here you are like Mr. Blood Angel. That Yeah, but like I said I've done it twice so there's always that. Twice is a lot. I've not even done one Eldar army yet. But one army was obviously when I was in my teens. And then another army was as as you said the reawakening when you return back to Warhammer um as an adult. Um so that was the second one. So over a a span it's not that long. So yeah.
Quite similar to yours both in terms of funding. Introduced to the hobby by somebody else. And then just going big on your first purchase and going going with what what you wanted. Yeah, that's mad. What What Do you remember the Cambridge store, right? It was next to that weird church under in this little um It's like under a palace, isn't it? Yeah, I remember it being inside like a um I'm drawing on the screen like everybody can see but basically like a square. Yeah, yeah. The shops facing each other, yeah. HMV was next door. Um that was my second store. Not that I ever went but cuz my dad lived in Haverhill, a town near Cambridge and we'd normally go to Cambridge on a Saturday.
Uh I don't know why we ever needed to go to Cambridge but it was a thing that we always My dad was probably like, "Well, I've got three kids and I don't have them during the week so just go to Cambridge." But I I loved that store. I I got a whole load of blisters for one quid there. My dad bought them. It was like the one time I think my dad bought me anything uh that wasn't like a book or educational. He probably saw the hobby as marginally educational, almost like do that instead of playing computer games, it's better for you. Um at least are now.
Well, mine is a is a bit different. Uh I don't remember exactly what's what what was my first purchase because basically I didn't have um like money to spend. My My parents more or less bought me what I wanted, so I didn't have money. But not not like not like any any time. I was going to do that. Yeah. But then it turned into they just bought me whatever they wanted. No, no, no. feel sorry for him and then it all went It's not like they bought me anything that I wanted at any time. They bought me uh things when it was my birthday, for example. So, when when my birthday came I had more or less whatever I wanted uh from from Warhammer, But like within limitations, though, I would assume, not like 600 quid's worth.
Yeah, of course. No, yeah, of course, of course. Like one box or Got you, got you. Uh I remember having the third edition of Warhammer 40K box and that's like my first real memory of of everything. Same. But Sort of. Yeah, basically it's because I lived I'm in my my high school was literally 100 m away from the first Games Workshop from the whole Spain. Okay. So, I I was there a lot. Yeah.
I was there a lot um with my friends and I had a few years that we were really into that store. And then yeah, it's it's just basically from there it's difficult to get to not get hyped having a store near your school, you know. Uh somehow I think the stores like I think that's what I is is the I can't remember the laminate la- what I really find frustrating about GW at the moment it it is that they got rid of the multi-staff stores with tables and they've converted to this and I I kind of understand it if you showed me their financials and I could understand it but to go to the one-man store I think it's sacrilege.
I understand it to a degree because those stores were hubs of of everything like a lot of people were spending so much time there playing every every Thursday there was a massive game. Yeah. People were spending there all the time. There were like three or four guys always painting there. The level of painting on the on that store was amazing and we had always a big diorama on the on the front of the store that was changing more or less every like three months or so or or maybe a bit more.
And it was like a a hub for the hobby and for people a good thing though. No, that's amazing. Yeah, yeah. But now it feels a bit like the stores are I don't know why should I go to a store? There's nothing for me there, you know. Yeah. I suppose independents are filling that role now, aren't they? Yeah. I also wonder though because I'm I obviously I was the one who brought this up and I agree. However, to play devil's advocate on this whenever I've gone into the Enfield store um there are a whole load of like 13 12 to 13 14 15-year-olds there and they stink some of them do and but they're they're loving the hobby. So I'm just basically I'm saying like is it possible that just because we're older we expect there to be other adults at Games Workshop. There were adults when I used to go, for sure.
Um Well, but now they're kids. know. When you I don't know. When you were younger, everybody seemed like an adult or or grown-up. Yeah. I think I think you probably go back and look at the stores you're going at on a Thursday night. Most of them would have been teens at at the most. Because like you said, there's that drop-off point, isn't there, where everybody drops away from Warhammer, and then it goes back again. And when you go back as an adult, you do not want to be gaming in a Games Workshop. So, you want to want to go to an independent, which has got a nice coffee or something, or you want to game around your friend's house or your own house in on your own time time schedule.
Like this. Like did gaming stores those independents exist in the '90s? Like No. No, but what what I'm say- I think a lot more people played at home than they do now. I think a lot I think I think the independents now people have have stopped gaming at home and are going to independents cuz they want to socialize more. But but one of the things that they really liked about the the old Games Workshop was playing there because the one of the guys there on on the store, they did like a it was like a game master. So, they they did all the theatrics.
They They put some spice to the to the games, you know? You had all the kids on both sides. You had more or less like maybe four kids to each to each side. They controlled one or two units each. And then the the the guy from the store that was the game master, and he was putting all this theatricals that that make the games really fun and something that they will never forget. Like the guy we met at Warhammer World who showed us Kill Team. Exactly. yeah. Like they love the hobby, don't they? And I think that's what semi makes me sad. Like I understand they're a business, but they get paid really, really low wage. Games Workshop knows that most of the staff are probably going to put half their money into Games Workshop anyway, cuz they love the hobby, right? So, they could afford to give them more money.
And they put them down to one-man stores. Like, I think a one-man store, the guy has no time to do anything but run the store. So, he can't do terrain, he can't paint, like I don't know. I Like, I know Tottenham Court Road has like six or But then, doesn't big stores like Warhammer Warhammer Warhammer World, don't they ship all these things to them now? I think that's why they do Yeah, cuz obviously they got their army painters and they've got their army scenery makers. I mean, they're not doing it specifically for the stores, but I think what they do, once they cycle out old stuff and bring in new stuff to warm Warhammer World, the older stuff finds a home in the local stores.
I'm sure I'm sure it of nice if they did. It would It would make some kind of sense, cuz they turn out a lot of models, don't they? Um also going back, uh let us know your thoughts on what you do for the Would You Rather's as well, please. Just to link it all in in the comments. Um and again, let us know your experience with Warhammer, and we are almost certain it'll be pretty much verbatim with what we've just said. This It will be It'll be interesting to see how many paper rounds funded armies. Well, I remember my mate was earning 20 quid in his paper round in Muswell Hill, which was probably a mile away. But Muswell Hill is a very affluent area, and I lived in the council estate area. Um in fact, one of the paper routes was the yellow block of flats, which was probably like a 400-m block of flats. Um Okay.
Uh and his paper round took him 15 minutes. 15 minutes, 20 quid a week. I was I didn't find that out till I was like 16. Uh I was quite annoyed. Um Yeah, I I I I I I'm I'm assuming that kids will look like let's say some kids 15 years old from being in the hobby now or something, and and look back at fifth edition, and it's their favorite edition and they they have the same rose-tinted glasses that I have for third like No, of course that's that's only uh that matters with what you lived, right?
For me it's third edition because I I was there for third edition but then fourth I I was not there so for me doesn't matter. So I checked out. I suppose all of um but that's why I'm I'm in like how can fifth or sixth or seventh be like your surely you look at them and go oh that's a dark period for you. Well, I depends. I have a nice a nice memories from sixth and seventh because I played a lot. And and you know Yeah. The reason the reason why those editions will be good isn't it's got nothing to do with the game.
It's because that's the best part of your life because you've got no bills to worry about. You think you've got worries but you don't have worries. You live in the hotel of mom and dad. You you know, you've got absolutely nothing to worry about. The fact that you have a warm feeling about third edition or whatever edition you have has got nothing to do with the game. It just takes you back to that point in your life where you had absolutely nothing to worry about. It's amazing. Sitting on the bus loving it. It it's the same as getting a smell that you had when you were young. The smell probably isn't that nice itself but it just takes you back to that place. So when you look back at third edition and you think that was the best, it wasn't. What you're saying is my my stage in life at that time was the best because food on the table every night. I didn't have to make it. I went to bed early. I got up late. Didn't have anything to worry about apart from maths and science homework. That's that's that's the reality. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think my childhood was slightly different um from that regard but yeah like I the the principles the principle is exactly The core basically. Yeah. Yeah. Like some of
like I mean I have I'm a I'm a very nostalgic person anyway and and I feel like I can think back to any time and I always think of it fondly, if you get what I mean. Like there's no real point in my life where I don't have fun memories. Um even when I was going through the whole gambling thing and you know, Tina was stressed and all this I I still like sadly think about parts of it fondly, except for like, you know, when she broke one wall. Anyway, yeah. I I think cuz it's natural human nature.
Yeah, that's it. We look back. You just remember the good parts of your life. Which is where the saying rose-tinted glasses comes from. Yeah. Reality is that the human mind just remembers the best parts. Yeah. And distinguishes the bad points because there's no reason to hold on to those memories. E- E- Except for the ex before Tina. There's no happy memories there. I don't know. And I was with her for 2 and 1/2 years. Should've got out sooner. Um so She doesn't listen.
Moving on. So, it's fine. Uh yeah, but I do I like as I'm now listening to him explain it and you line all like there's a lot of happy memories back then and that links to buying artworks that you can't afford. And I could afford that one actually. That was quite cheap. But the one I'm pointing at with my finger. Which everyone can see. Exactly. Well, I don't want to It's It feels like I'm name-dropping. So Jamie's diary. That is the jingle for Jamie's diary. Jamie's diary.
And that is the best jingle so far. Literally. Absolutely. The easiest. Hold on, better than this? Uh I had to mix it up. I didn't want it to everything to be too The The more The more I hear that, I just keep thinking it's like a Halloween theme jingle. It was what it was. Right, so here it is. I've forgotten what it's saying again. Okay, go ahead. No, no. All right. My PC pauses when Bluetooth connects. So, you will now have Oh, shit.
It doesn't keep the formatting. Hold on. What? What? What? Oh, wait. What are they waiting for? So, Jamie's diary for all of you wondering, um Let you know, there's some trial and error things that we're we're going to test out. Um and I'm happy to make mistakes, and I think that's important. But, this is I've only kept 2 days, and it's literally a diary. Normally, the diary will be hobby-related, I feel. For but, with some anecdotal humor, hopefully. Uh whereas, I haven't done anything hobby-related. So, this is literally a diary of my day now. You're That's what you're going to read out, okay?
So, um So, I mean, I've I read the first three points. You say it's a diary of your day, I say it's a cry for help. Lionel is going to be the reader. Off you go, Lionel. Okay. Bear with me, cuz I've I've I only just had it for 2 seconds. Well, we don't mind. Saturday, the 16th. Woke up today with a mosquito landing on my ear. So, I slapped it. As fast as a race car it was, and it had blood on it. Disappointed. Then Tina brought in the little one only on my bed. He smiled at me, and I thought, imagine Tina smiled at me like this. Huh.
Woman and the kids left together. Should we just Wasted 2 hours. want to say, the mosquito like there was a mosquito a couple of days ago that kept me up at night, and I didn't get to kill it. Whereas, this one, I was fast as a race car, and I fucking slapped it on my ear. And make it clear in your diary notes, Jamie. Yeah, wow. You're You're painting a clear picture there. Wasted 2 hours trying to beat four for one in StarCraft II. A four v one. Lost. Four v one. Okay. Yeah. Tried for 1 hour to drill into the world's strongest wall. Yeah.
Got stuck. Got stuck. For it. Oh, got sick of it. Sorry, got sick of it. He got sick of it. So, went to IKEA. Yeah. From tube. 4 minutes. It's how pointless life is. Off the tube and walk through the underground part that goes under the roads. The escalators and it opened up to IKEA's sign. What? Just quickly, uh, it was cuz I don't think we all heard it. Because I didn't hear it. It was got on the tube, it took 4 minutes, and I thought how life pointless life is.
Um, and then I got off the tube. tube. Got on the tube, took 4 minutes, thought how pointless life is. Off the tube and walk through the underground part that goes onto the roads. Got to the escalators and it opened up the IKEA sign. Thought that was pleasant. Some sort of heaven or pearly gates, only yellow. Spoke to three people in IKEA and asked if they spoke English. They did. With my phone, but I didn't what It didn't work three times. I asked another IKEA man and he also spoke English. It was nice.
That was nice. Finished the wall and thought, "If I wasn't a programmer, drilling holes in walls would be a terrible job." That was That was Can I just the worst like for what you see If you could see what I've drilled, like it's literally just some plastic in a wall. To to to spend like 3 hours drilling four holes is difficult to be honest. It's the It's It's very difficult. When shopping, car didn't work again. Came home. Off my socks.
Pain was so was too much. Realized I forgot my buy swag. Swag. I had to go back. I've no idea what that is. Swag is um you are allowed to interrupt both of you as well. Like we can talk about this stuff. Um schleg is single cream. But I particularly like that it's called schleg. Schleg. I was nearly I was nervous you you got me to say something I shouldn't have said. Uh room's still a mess. That was I think 16. Now I have to say I thought this was going to be your hobby diary.
Yeah. Or your move not your movements throughout the day. I'll I'll explain that. I I did it I didn't realize I was going to become the narrator to your life like um Okay. Someone who does narrating. Ready for Sunday? Uh one sec. Yeah, usually the sharing uh has Sunday the 17th. I think my own fart wake me up. Playing with the level of cream having scrambled eggs. I think 250 g of single cream is too much for four eggs.
Easted light cream. Insulted in my pants. My pants, sorry. I was going to say I don't remember sorting out my pants. Yeah, I wasn't expecting anything hobby related. Everything else had been so routine, daily, mundane. I wasn't expecting pants to be in there. Have over 500 points. Paints. Believe that must should say pots. Is that Paints. Paints. All right, neither. I have over 500 paints. Tried the 4v1 Starcraft again. Lost.
Coded the sound assets. Weekend done. And then here we are. Here we are. At least there was some At least there was something hobby related. Yeah. Yeah. Um That is not what I was expecting. I generally thought it would be a case of went down to my local store, met a nice guy, had a had my first game. I didn't realize it was going to be from the point you wake up to the point you went to bed. Blow by blow. I mean it's a normal life though, right? Nothing unusual about it. What When you said don't worry Lionel, I'm sending over to you now, you don't need to pre-read or prepare for it, you weren't lying, were you? Yes. I'm a Do I Yeah, I I don't often sugarcoat things.
Uh so No, I think um I think we did good though, you know, we we read it. My own fart did wake me up, I think. Um and my synopsis on the eggs are like Tina cooked me some eggs. Have I Have I told you the story yet? Mm, I don't think so. So obviously I've been doing bananas with scrambled eggs. Well, you should know by You should know by now, even if you haven't heard the story, you say yes, I know the story. We can move on. Scrambled eggs Scrambled egg with with uh bananas in it, right? Which is what I've been having um because I was just sick of just scrambled eggs by themselves. But then Tina cooked me some scrambled eggs and they were probably the best scrambled eggs I've ever had in my life. And then she was like, "Do you want to know the secret ingredient?" And I was like, "Do I want to know the secret ingredient?" And she was like, "It's nothing like that, Jay." I was like, "Oh yeah, okay." And she was like, "It's just cream." Um I was like, "Whoa." So I tried cream and I put like a not a a generous serving. I put like a normal amount in
and it was fucking brilliant. So I'm on this quest to see like not how much is too much, like how much is the perfect amount. Uh so I put a seriously large amount of of this single cream in there and it it wasn't great. It did I honestly it tasted a bit too much like like cream. Well, I've seen this on a TikTok story that you sent me. The egg, yes. And not not The banana thing, yeah. That was the banana, yeah. I showed someone else that and they they just said they want to throw up. I said that's probably the least I I tried it and I have to say it it was good. I added a little bit of sugar just in case because it was a bit just it was like half a spoon or less than half a spoon. Are you both confusing the concept of an omelet with the concept of a pancake cuz it seems that you've gone in with an with eggs. An omelet I believe you you could buy you buy in restaurants and stuff, right?
Basically basically it basically it's a an omelet banana or banana omelet. But you don't buy banana omelets in restaurants, Jamie. No, but you can't make omelets at home, can you? It's only in restaurants you can get it. What? You don't You can't make an omelet I can't make an omelet at home. Well, that's why you. Why you not? Well, I don't know how to do it. What? Ah, because you don't know how to know how to do it but you can. Yeah, but there's certain things that like restaurants can do that you can't do. I'm very confused.
Why it's extremely easy to do an omelet. it's just scrambled egg though. It's not an omelet for sure. Yeah, yeah. It's just Well, I just I just smush up an An omelet and scram. Yeah, but there's a very fine line between an omelet and scrambled eggs. Can I request that if I'm going to Morgan Freeman narrate over your life, we can at least get you going into a hobby shop next week. We can do a workshop or something. Yeah, I mean now I've I've I've I've borderline organized my paints. You can see them, right? Like I'm basically working on what I'm going to throw away cuz cuz I want to whittle down my paints to like a hundred and even that's just like far too many, I think. But yeah.
That's what I've just got I've got Honestly, I've I brought all the paints I've ever owned except for all the ones that are in the loft um here with me and I'm I've I've already got rid of like 300 paints here. Maybe 200. So, yeah. If anybody in Austria wants paints, uh the odds of an Australian listening to this podcast are very slim. But I'll ship them worldwide for you. You can have that diary. Yeah. Um So Um hold on. Uh what is that? No. No. No. No. Oh.
Oh, I didn't record Okay. Well, I didn't record the jingle. But Okay, right. Uh normally I don't like to like I prefer it when Anyway. The raw slimes. There you go. It's good though, right? That's That's we we seem to have a zombie theme or a Nurgle theme. Well, no. He's He was in a dungeon. He's in a dungeon. Yeah, clearly he was. The would you tell us about that little bottom of servitor you were talking about in the first place?
Sorthamack. Sorthamack. The raw slimes. Right. So, the He did He played that. I want to ring 999. Right. So, the The concept here is uh what potentially each week when the feature is featured, uh one of us three will be giving uh you guys a rundown on some lore from anything anything at all. Probably I'll be doing 40K.
I'll now probably be doing something that he enjoys. Um but honestly like it could be lore from anything hobby related. So, that does include Marvel or whatever. Um and it can be as fine-tuned as you like or as general as you like. You could do, you know, lifespan in 40K or you could do, um you know, a weapon s specific to a character you like and nothing else. So, um I think it's just a chance for us to nerd out a bit, really. So, Yeah. And the And the good thing is I think, well, the the main thing is that we explain it with our own words and and it's something that we are passionate about.
Obviously, it's not like we are going to nail it everything like we can make mistakes. That's we are just nerds. Well, it would be great if we do make mistakes that people point out those mistakes specifically and call those people out. So, I'd like if Arnell gets it wrong, I think I'd I'd really appreciate a long detailed explanation of of how he fucked up. Uh but it it it genuinely would be good to hear where we made mistakes to learn, right? And then Yeah, of course. feel stupid. And I think that's the most important thing.
Um so, today's episode or whatever you want to call it is Arnell and he is going to take it away. Well, yeah, I'm going to explain a little bit about the Death Company and specifically the Lamenters, which is the the main the top clan uh that leads the Death Company. For those who don't know, uh Death Company is a um it's like a company, of course. Uh from the Blood Angels side, it's like Yeah.
It's um it's a group of of people space marines that um are suffering from a from an illness. Let's say that that Blood Angels have a um uh flaw, which is they they get pretty crazy sometimes. And they because of that, they have another thing, which is when when their primarch died, they they suffered from the Black Rage, which is they get even more crazy and there's no going back. Do they all get that?
very Like so, they were all psychotic at one point. Were they? Yes, potentially they they can all fall into the black rage. So, they they all have that fear. But, it it's pretty um it's pretty secret. Like, it's not something that all chapters know. Like, only the Blood Angels know and and only the high ranks know. So, they can get crazy and they don't know what's happening to them, for example. But, well, in this case, uh these guys, they become absolutely crazy. There's no going back. And then, uh they basically see uh they relive the death of of their primarch and they go back to the to the battle uh against Horus. So, they are they are like living in another moment.
And there's no going back. It's disgusting. So, yeah, it's it's a pretty shitty. But, then there's this guy, Le- Lemartes, which is which is a chaplain, uh that suffers the black rage, but he's conscious. So, he has one foot in in both sides. He has one foot on the madness and one foot on the not madness. Did you know this line? Uh Um I knew I know about the black rage, um but Lemartes, I didn't realize he he I didn't know if it was a case of like Mephiston or Mephiston's actually conquered the black rage, whereby he fell to it, but then came back. And what you're saying are now that Lemartes actually suffering the black rage while at the same time controlling it. Is that correct?
He he he's not Yeah, exactly. Mephiston has uh overcome the black rage twice, actually. But, Lemartes is living it all the time. And they are testing him uh to see if if it's they can cure it. Yeah, well, the gene-seed is fine. But, so, um the there's one one phrase that he says in the book that I think it it summarizes a lot what he is. He says that he gives voice to thunder.
So, he is basically the pastor of this madmen who just want to kill and they don't know where they are. They They basically will kill everything. They will kill guardsmen that they are with them. They will kill absolutely everything. And Lemartes is the one that points them out where they have to be. And so, he in the book he is he's quite tortured because he obviously uh feels that rage and and cannot like obviously he could let it go and just fall into it but he doesn't want to and he he wants to be helpful for the chapter and and put him puts himself in the hands of Corbulo which is the sanguinary priest.
So, he is he's getting studied all the time. He's getting in his spare time then? Like does he sleep and read books? Like what's he Yeah, they play Nintendo Switch. He writes He writes a diary. Probably less interesting than mine. Woke up. Still suffering the black rage. That wasn't very nice. Went to sleep. Yeah, so yeah. I think it's a it's a very interesting character because it's it's kind of tortured. It's a character that it's here but it's not. He knows that he's crazy but at the same time he's not that crazy. But then all his brothers are crazy.
And he just has to lead the lead them to to to die basically. Why? Yeah, go on. So, in terms of cuz I don't remember whether I read this or not. Obviously, they're a essentially a kamikaze unit once they turn to the black rage before the battle. Yeah. Those that survive which won't be many because they fight to the death, what do they do with them? I presume Did they hold them for the next battle? Did they exterminate them on the on the field? Yeah, they can hold them. They have, for example, they have rhinos where they can they chain them. And it's basically like a um a jail for them. But then also there's this other character which is Astorath who basically what it does is kill um all the remains of the Death Company.
He's He's He's not like he hates them or anything. On the contrary, they when someone falls into the Death Company, it's like a they are falling for the Blood Angels, for the for the uh Sanguinius, you know. It's quite sad though. So, it's not It's very sad. It's extremely sad. Because they have to obviously it's like they have a terrible sickness and they have to put them down. Cuz Yeah. Like a dog. off. I don't I don't I don't know if it's changed or whether remembering it incorrectly. They all get the red thirst before battle. It's like a battle frenzy where they all get ready for battle. And if they don't control that, the red thirst then moves into the black rage, is it? I forget what you just said.
Yeah, the the red thirst where they can't come back from it. Yeah, the red thirst is that flaw they have. They they get completely crazy and they are like even more crazy than Khorne berserkers. So, they when a Blood Angel falls into the red thirst, it's a killing machine. But they can't can come back. It's not like they are seeing anything. They just Yeah, they are just um Well, in the blinded by rage. But then when they go Oh, I see. Yeah. Yeah.
I think I know what you're going to say. Now you go. And they get deep far, they then falls to black rage. Exactly. And then when the black rage goes in then they are seeing the primark, they are seeing Horus, they are seeing the the Horus heresy basically. Cuz in the Warhammer plus TV show uh spoilers uh if you haven't watched the Blood Angel probably fast forward 40 seconds um on Warhammer plus but yeah at the end of the anyway fuck it doesn't worry about lineup. At the end of the show he's seeing Horus and he goes on a mad one to kill the primark from the tyranids. Yeah. Uh trick. And he's literally seeing him and he's like the primark must have been confused as fuck like why are you calling me Horus?
And like dancing around he's killed something way above his station. Um Hm. That's what I was going to say they actually think they're there. Yeah, yeah literally they think they're there. And there was another episode the last episode they did in the company of death. I've not seen that. That they uh and then I'm not going to spoil it. I can take the headphones off and listen. Uh it's very good like I have to say I it's probably one of the episodes that I enjoyed the most on the whole Warhammer TV. I absolutely love Warhammer TV but that is a subject for another time. Um Um um um so any more you want to say?
Summary? Uh about about this or about anything else? About your um about your Um no I mean I could I could talk a lot about this. I think they the the Blood Angels overall have so many great characters because of that because that their main their main thing about this flaw about the black rage about the red thirst they have so many opportunities to to be to have great characters like Mephiston who conquered the black rage and now he is like super thought he was a prime lord but he's not he's just a space marine.
Yeah, he's a super overpowered space marine. A psychic crazy guy basically. Yeah, he looks at you with weird eyes. Um So if any mistakes were in there please let us know in the comments. Um and also great to let us know can you even comment on Spotify? I don't I'm assuming you can. Um if not Discord server right? Uh any subjects that you'd like us to cover even if I've never heard of it but I I'm quite excited to do ones that I've never heard of mostly because it will be largely humorous and inaccurate. Um So that is our law slaves. I feel like that name doesn't make sense. Law of slaves.
No, I guess it's law of slaves because we are doing it the law Well, it's law masters right? But we're doing a a play on that. Yeah, exactly exactly. But law slaves makes no sense whereas law masters No, I don't think that works. Makes Well, we're slaves to the law I guess. That that Are we all that? Yeah. Good save. Thanks mate. Um and to give you a little sneak peek of things to come possibly, you know, we're not saying they will. We've got task masters task masters. So uh we give someone a task um so next week and it's it's very similar to to law slaves actually but I'll be like Lionel next week I want to hear all about the elder gemstones. And next week we want to learn about Tyrion's the excitement in his face. Oh mine, yeah. Lionel's not No, he's Yeah, Lionel Lionel was disgusted. Um so the concept is that somebody else gives a task to someone and it could be anything or the task could be paint an
elder guardian and then he has to do that for next episode right? So that's the concept there and I've not thought of anything. Uh we've also got the concept of recipe of the week, which is one of us is going to give a recipe. Uh a painting recipe that is and um and then we're going to discuss it. Is it bad? Is it good? Uh and that'll be the three of us. There's some lots of comedic opportunities there, I do believe. Then we've got guess the mini. Might might not go with that. Uh we've got what if, which is basically uh we come up with a fake parallel universe in the 40K fantasy or something.
Um so someone needs to come up with some lore there, which I've already done. There's actually a space marine chapter I've created that are friends with Eldar. Um and it took them a long time to get there. But they're they're really good friends. Like some Eldar sleep in, you know, with the space not sexually, obviously. That's just And you know, some space marines allowed on the craft world. They're they're just really two solid craft worlds. Anyway, I've also got one where the emperor doesn't die. I got one where Tyrannids come in early. Anyway, there's loads of what ifs. Uh we've got commissar's fashion review, but that might be saved for the hot pepper show. I don't know cuz you kind of need visuals for that. We've got codex review. We've got emperor's memes review. We've got That's it. That's all the ideas we've got. And we've got That's it.
That's I thought it was one. I was going to scroll. It was not. So there's a lot of ideas we got. We're we're genuinely super excited to um So here's one for the Get that fucking job done, mate. taskmasters That's the last one. No, that's brilliant, actually. That is very good. Get that fucking job done, mate. taskmasters So that's the taskmasters. understand an award, only mate. Get that fucking job done, mate. Yeah, I heard all of it. Yeah, yeah, it's It It sounds like a commissar, that does. Yeah, it's it's it's basically Well, but mixed with a with an orc war boss or something. Yeah, cuz it's cockney, which is like weird. Orks are cockney. That Yeah, well, yeah.
Get that fucking job done, mate. I'm talking about Taskmasters. Topic of the week. All right. Um no, while I have fun with my creations, um so, do you have any tasks? Does anybody have any immediate tasks that they would want for next week for one of us? I do not want to be researching Eldar. Yeah. I'm so sick of Eldar having been your friend for the last It is the thought of then going to research Eldar to tell it back to you. I'll I've got a task for myself cuz you guys is too pussy to come up with one.
Write a diary. Yeah, a diary that's interesting. Yeah, fine. Um I want to paint one Ultramarine miniature. Okay. Oh. Yeah. Nice. It's weird that I'm selecting it myself. I feel like that's against the rules, but there were no rules. I think I've a I think I've ever painted a model Should we all do an Ultramarine for next week? we We could give We could do or either each each one of us have one task.
Or what is the task of the week? Oh gosh, it's Or or we all have the same task. You have a bad in your garden, mate. Taskmasters. That's what it is, Lando. Taskmasters, that's right. So, or or either we each of each of us have one different Taskmaster thing. Yeah. Or we have the same one. I mean, I don't mind. Yeah. Both both are good. Uh but it would be cool to all three do something. It would It would make it more interactive, right? Right. Yeah. Yeah. Um so, I really want to But I don't have something. I really wanted to paint a TV. You know, we've all got the Marvel United stuff.
Oh, yeah, interesting. I left that in London. Have you really? All of it? It's just too much I I had to work. I just look at I just look all at all the boxes behind me and I just want to I mean obviously Arno's done Arno's done them well and good Well, he did the box arts for some of them, so Yeah, for the last one, too. Yeah. You did box arts, did you? Yeah, for the for the Spider-Verse. Well, I did Carnage. Yeah, I did the all the good ones. Calm down, mate. But so Arno, I could choose I choose I choose so Have you got actually have you got the entire set?
No, the last one I didn't because I have like I don't know, 11 or 12 boxes and We all have we all got the the original set the mark the original Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What about See, I've got to finish my Monty thing off. What about if we pick cuz we've all got those, we pick one Should I take this off air? Should I pause the show while we this Okay. One sec back. Okay, we're back. Sorry. Right. Uh an idea is cuz we know we've all got that first Kickstarter.
But Jimmy doesn't. That's the problem. Wher- where is your Give me like Give it Yeah, give it like a month and a half and I'll have it. Yeah, I'm not talking about before a month and a half, yeah. Okay, sorry. And and then we we cuz I've got Monty. We we pick a character from that box and we nominate the other person to paint it. That's cool cuz then you can make me paint something I don't want to paint, which is quite cool. But I I also love that we've got a a week, which is a real deadline, right? This is what the journey is for. Like I In my opinion, it's it's it's making or forcing us to paint.
And hopefully, you know, Yeah, the That's masters, though, can can be many things, not only Well, originally it was meant to Someone else says the law about it, so yeah. Or or or I don't know, go to somewhere or do something or Do a star jump on the Empire State Building, for example. Or do some research about something or but but I like this this this week's painting something. So, you want to paint a TV, Lionel?
Um I do. Yeah, I do. It's just It's just It's just It's just having Cuz I've got two projects on my desk at the minute that I've got that I've got to paint and you know what I'm saying. know you're out basically of of any kind of painting sauces until Monty. Till Monty. Yeah, but then I'm I'm I'm up for it because I'm used to painting a model a week. Yeah. I think once Monty's done, you'll you'll come in so we can give you a different task if we had it, but we don't have one. So, Arno and I, do you want to get on the ultramarine?
Both or not? Would you rather the ultramarine. Pardon? I could paint the ultramarine. Uh and what are the rules for this task? Have it done obviously by next week. Do we put whips in the journey? Or do we just do the finished model? Finished model in the journey. Yeah. Okay, in that case, I will start a channel called Taskmasters. And does it have to be what what standard? That's why this this whole thing cuz how long have we both been saying literally 4 months on now we've both like we need to come up with a plan on how to motivate ourselves to paint stuff. Uh, and then we might have found it. Yeah. This this though this week is a bit like that because it's the first week, but if in the following weeks if we put something like, uh, yeah, uh, for example, ah, this this could be a good idea actually. I I'm winging it, but could be nice. You know that uh Games Workshop uh stores they give they give away, um, miniatures of the month, right? Yeah. We we could actually, yeah, we could actually do something like that, and and obviously join the Excuse me, fantasy is dead. Okay. But yeah, yeah. Our how The older projects. project of of army or our figure that we want to paint or our collection of something is growing.
Yeah, yeah. And then the the Taskmaster is something that we throw we Yeah, every week. And And it can be for example, if you say, "No, I'm a very slow painter." It doesn't matter. You have to do it in one week. So get it get it done Yeah, yeah. with that time. So it's not something that you are tied to like 1 month painting one miniature. No, you you need to finish this. Yeah. That's why it's a Taskmaster thing, you know. Yeah, talking to you there, Jamie. I'm sorry. Say that You know, somebody said to you, "I'm a really slow painter."
